Why a private cinema at home is worth the investment

The right question is not what a room costs. It is what it is worth, per year, to have a place at home where the family sits down and stays. A dedicated room is the only one that pays for itself in hours used, and the only one that cannot be improvised later.
Cost per hour is the only honest sum
A properly built private cinema in Portugal sits, in works and equipment, in the same order of magnitude as a high-end kitchen. The difference is that nobody asks what the kitchen is worth per hour of use, and everybody asks that of the room. Run the sum the same way: two sessions a week, ten years, is over a thousand nights. No other leisure investment in the house comes close to that number of hours per euro.
What you buy is not a screen, it is attention
In a living room with a television, the film competes with the window, the ceiling light, the hallway and whoever walks past. In a dedicated room it competes with nothing: no reflections, because the surfaces were chosen not to have them; no background noise, because the isolation removed it; no distraction, because the only lit thing is the screen. That exclusivity is the difference between watching a film and attending one, and it is the one thing you cannot buy off a shelf.
The room is the space that least tolerates being done later
Almost everything in a house can be corrected later. A sofa is replaced, a wall repainted, a worktop changed. The room cannot: clear height, the ratio between width and length, wall mass, floor decoupling and cable routes are settled on the drawings and, once cast in concrete, cost more to fix than they cost to build. Anyone who joins the conversation with the room already built pays twice.
What the room gives back, beyond film
A calibrated room does far more than cinema. It is where the final is watched by eight people with the same sound, where a record plays end to end without the whole house hearing it, where games run with low latency on a large image, and where a work presentation happens without anybody hunting for a cable. A space that serves five uses stops being a luxury and becomes infrastructure.
A private cinema is not justified by the equipment inside it. It is justified by being the only space in the house whose quality is decided before the works begin, and by returning more hours of use per euro than anything else.
