Isolation and acoustic treatment are not the same thing

It is the most expensive misunderstanding in the trade. Foam on the walls does not stop sound getting out, and a double wall does not, by itself, make a room sound good. Two different problems, two different materials, two different moments in the build.
Isolation is mass, air and decoupling
Isolating means stopping acoustic energy crossing the envelope. It is done with mass (weight per square metre), an air cavity and mechanical decoupling between layers: walls that do not touch the structure, ceilings hung on resilient mounts, floating floors. It is heavy construction, and it has to be decided before plastering. No decorative panel glued to a wall adds useful isolation.
Treatment is what happens inside the room
Treating means controlling how sound behaves once it leaves the speakers: first reflections, reverberation time, room modes at low frequencies. It is done with calculated absorption, diffusion on the right surfaces and bass traps with real volume. A room can be perfectly isolated and still sound bad, and that is exactly what happens in most converted basements.
The door is the classic mistake
Money goes into a double wall and then a normal interior door is fitted. The envelope's performance becomes the door's performance, because energy always finds the weakest path. The same applies to ventilation grilles without attenuators, blind boxes, back-to-back sockets and any duct crossing the wall without a resilient break.
The right order saves money
First decide the geometry and the isolation, because they are irreversible. Then calculate the treatment, with the geometry already fixed. Only at the end choose equipment, because it is the acoustics that decide how many speakers make sense and how much power is needed. Invert that order and you buy equipment to compensate for a room that could have been built well for less.
Isolation is solved in construction and has no substitute; treatment is solved by calculation, not by decoration. Swapping the order between them is the most common way to spend a lot and hear badly.
